SHELLter
This project looked to design a unique family residence, one that could take advantage of the site, a bluff overlooking a large lake. The construction also needed to provide safety in the event of a tornado. The design was generated by taking the magnitude and direction of historical tornado data, and after conversion to a vector, used to generate the concrete shell that houses the programmatic space. This tornado data was then inverted, creating a system in which to size and place each aperture within the structure, minimizing the forces seen on the glass. Lastly, a safety pod was created, utilizing a counter balanced steel door to seal the kitchen, bath and loft space in the event of tornadic activity.
